General protein information
Gene Type protein-coding
Organism Homo sapiens (human)

Summary The protein encoded by this gene recognizes the sequence CCTTGAG along with other members of the HMG-box class DNA-binding proteins. It acts during chondrocyte differentiation and, with steroidogenic factor 1, regulates transcription of the anti-Muellerian hormone (AMH) gene. Deficiencies lead to the skeletal malformation syndrome campomelic dysplasia, frequently with sex reversal. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

GeneRIFs: Gene References Into Functions What's a GeneRIF?

What is the normal function of the SOX9 gene?

The SOX9 gene provides instructions for making a protein that plays a critical role during embryonic development. The SOX9 protein is especially important for the development of the skeleton and reproductive system. This protein attaches (binds) to specific regions of DNA and regulates the activity of other genes. On the basis of this action, the SOX9 protein is called a transcription factor.
