The receptor mediates postsynaptic inhibition in the central nervous system. Defects in this gene are a cause of startle disease (STHE), also known as hereditary hyperekplexia or congenital stiff-person syndrome. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, May 2014]. Transcript Variant: This variant (3) lacks an internal exon in the 5' region, which results in translation initiation at a downstream AUG start codon, and contains an alternate splice site at the 5' end of the last exon, compared to variant 1. The resulting isoform (3) has a shorter N-terminus and lacks an internal segment in the C-terminal region, compared to isoform 1.
