Description |
The neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) exerts a wide spectrum of effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems. In the context of human reproduction, oxytocin promotes uterine contractions and lactation. It is prescribed for the induction of labor more often than any other drug. Oxytocin receptors are expressed in the uterus and mammary glands, where they mediate the aforementioned functions in partutition, contraction of the uterine myometrium during labor and milk letdown. In addition, oxytocin receptors are expressed in a variety of other peripheral tissues and in the brain, where oxytocin mediates a variety of functions. OT antagonists may have applications in preventing preterm labor and dysmenorrhea. Its agonists may also be useful for the treatment of psychiatric illnesses such as anxiety, drug abuse, sexual dysfunction, eating disorders, and autism. |
