| Description | Urotensins are neuropeptide secreted from the urophysis in the caudal neurosecretory system of the fishes. Two bioactive Urotensins, Urotensin I and Urotensin II have been cloned from various species including mammals. Urotensin I is a 41 aa peptide, which showed prolonged hypotensive effects in mammals. Urotensin I is structurally similar to mammalian corticotropin-releasing factor. Urotensin I is found in the brain of most fish species. It may be involved in the regulation of blood pressure in fish. Urotensin I is closely related to mammalian urocortin and releases ACTH from cultured rat pituitary cells. |
