1' carbon by the conventional chemical nomenclature used to refer
to the various carbon atoms in an organic molecule, the carbon to which the purine or pyrimidine
base is
attached to Deoxyribose
in DNA and to
ribose in RNA
is designated the 1' carbon, the adjacent carbon in the sugar the 2'
carbon, the next carbon the 3', the next the 4', and the last the 5' carbon.
Moieties or residues attached to a particular carbon are identified by the
number of the carbon to which they are attached, such as the 5´-phosphate
and the 3´-hydroxyl
residues of a nucleic
acid.
