5' cohesive DNA termini

the single-stranded, complementary regions of DNA that are formed when both of the strands of a double-stranded DNA molecule are cleaved in an asymmetric manner. The Restriction endonuclease EcoRI, for example, cleaves the sequence "GAATTC" between the G and A to generate the 4-base, 5'-cohesive terminus "AATT". EcoRI.GIF
