In mRNA, the 5'
end of a newly synthesized molecule corresponds to the transcription
initiation point associated with a promoter. RNAprocessing
steps and degradation may remove or modify this terminus so that the transcription
initiation point is absent from the mature mRNAmolecule and, consequently, from
any cDNA made
from the mature mRNA. By convention, nucleic
acid sequences
are written with th 5' end at the left.
