in vitro evolution

The optimization of a gene product function (binding or catalysis) by an iterative procedure involving mutation, expression, selection and replication. In at least one example, continuous in vitro evolution has been achieved in optimizing the condensation of an oligodeoxynucleotide with a promoter.Wright, M.C. and Joyce, G.F.
