R A designation of absolute configuration at an asymmetrical centre; classified as R (rectus) or S (sinister) according to the arrangement in space of its substituents, which are assigned precedence according to sequence rules. Highest priority is given to the highest atomic number. If for an asymmetrical carbon atom, when viewed from the direction opposite the substituent of lowest priority, the sequence from the highest to lowest priority of the remaining substituents follows a clockwise path, the configuration is R; if counter-clockwise it is S. (see also chirality; CIP classification; prochirality)
