sugar

A simple carbohydrate that consists of a chain of carbon atoms, one of which is a carbonyl carbon (aldehyde or ketone), while the others bear hydroxy groups to give it the basic formula (CH2O)n, sometimes condensed into a hemiacetal or hemiketal; sugar derivatives include oxidation and reduction products, phosphate and sulphate esters, and amino derivatives.
