tandem mass spectrometry (tandem MS; MS/MS)

An adaptation of MS for the analysis of molecular structure; an initial separation by MS generates a peak, i.e. a molecular ion or large fragment, that is further fragmented by gas-phase collision, the daughter fragments of which are themselves separated by MS. When more than two stages are involved, the technique is called multi-dimensional MS (MSn, where n indicates the number of stages). Grant, R.R. and Cooks, R.G. (1990) Science 250, 61-68
