tier The cohort of chains of a branched-chain polysaccharide that all have the same relationship to the branch points. The outer tier of glycogen is all those glucosyl units that are attached in 14 bonds that run from the non-reducing ends to the first 16 branch points; the second tier is those glycosyl units between the first and second outer branch points, etc. (see also limit dextrin)
