Yin-Yang hypothesis The now-abandoned theory that bidirectional cellular processes, i.e. those that involve two individual pathways (rather than one that may be 'on' or 'off'), e.g. proliferation/ contact inhibition, glycogen synthesis/ breakdown, are regulated by a balance of the opposed actions of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP.
