yellow enzyme One of the two first-discovered flavoenzymes. The 'new' yellow enzyme (das neue gelbe Ferment) catalyses the reduction of molecular oxygen or Methylene Blue by glucose 6-phosphate, as is now understood via reduction by NADPH, and has an FAD prosthetic group. The first-discovered 'old' yellow enzyme (das alte gelbe Ferment) has an FMN prosthetic group but has no recognized biological function. Karplus, P.A., Fox, K.M. and Massey, V. (1995) FASEB J. 9, 1518-1526
