competitive PCR A variation of PCR to make it a semi-quantitative assay for a polynucleotide. A new restriction site is introduced into the polynucleotide to be assayed so that, when an unknown quantity of the original and a known amount of the modified template are used together, both will be copied but their products will be distinguishable. The products are quantified on the basis of binding a radiolabelled hybridization probe and incorporation of labelled primer or fluorescence of bound ethidium bromide; the ratio of their products is equated with the ratio of the original templates.
