competitive inhibition

A form of enzyme inhibition in which the inhibitor competes with the substrate for the enzyme's substrate-binding site. The result is an increase in the Km value while leaving Vmax unaltered. (see also inhibitor; non-competitive inhibition (mixed inhibition); uncompetitive inhibition)
