double-sieve editing A proposed mechanism that accounts for the high selectivity of some enzymes, especially the amino acid activating enzymes. An initial screening sorts substrates by size - those too large cannot enter the binding site - while those smaller than optimal may be activated by immediate hydrolysis in situ.(see see kinetic proofreading)Fersht, A.
