An animal or plant from which a certain gene has been deliberately deleted, in order to observe, as a test for the gene's physiological significance, the viability or phenotype of the organism. A knock-out is contrasted to a transgenic, in which a gene from another genomic source has been inserted.(see see knock-down; knock-in)
