The carboxyl end of a protein. As proteins are linear polymers of α-amino acidsH2N-CHRa-CO-(NH-CHR’-CO)n-NH-CHRz-COOHwhere R is one of the 20 chemical groups that distinguish the amino acids that occur in proteins, the N-terminus is the amino acid residue H2N-CHRa-CO-, and the C-terminus is the residue -NH-CHRz-COOH.
