Ion Channel Target Solutions
Ion channels are multi-transmembrane proteins that help establish and control the small voltage gradient cross the plasma membrane of all living cells by allowing the flow of ions down their electrochemical gradient. Furthermore, many ion channels have been well recognized as important therapeutic targets for treating a number of diseases.
Manual patch clamp, referred to as the ‘gold standard’, is a traditional tool for direct ion current measurements. However, the extremely low throughput of manual patch clamp precludes the possibility of screening for a large number of compounds. Though new automated patch clamp instruments have increased the throughput greatly, the throughput of patch clamp technology is still the bottleneck of high throughput screening (HTS). Consequently, ion channel class is still underexploited as therapeutic targets. Recently patch clamp technology is mainly used for cardiotoxicity assessment against human ether-a-gogo-related (hERG) ion channel.
