MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small (~22 nucleotides) noncoding RNAs expressed by metazoans and viruses. They regulate target mRNAs posttranscriptionally by directing cleavage and degradation of the latter if there is full complementarity or by inhibiting translational initiation if complementarity is imperfect. miRNAs are processed from primary transcripts known as pri-miRNA, to short stem-loop structures called pre-miRNA, and finally to functional miRNA.
Several unique physical attributes of miRNAs, such as small size, lack of poly-adenylated tails, have made them elusive and challenging to study.
