Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a 50,000 Da glycoprotein that belongs to the serine proteinase inhibitor superfamily which is the primary inhibitor of both tissue-type and urokinase-type plasminogen activators. The main function of PAI-1 is to decrease fibrinolysis, leading to fibrin accumulation, which is associated with thrombotic disease. The gene for PAI-1 may have a deletion/insertion polymorphism (4G/5G) located at -675 bp on chromosome 7 q 21.3-22.
