IgM is a pentamer composed of 5 immunogobulin molecules linked through their F(c) domain by the J chain. The mu chain is the heavy chain of IgM and contains an F(c) domain. IgM is the first antibody to appear in response to initial exposure to antigen, followed by IgG. The spleen is the major site of specific IgM production, IgM in normal serum is often found to bind to specific antigens , even in the absence of prior immunization making it a first line of immune surveillance.
