Abscission is the natural process by which plants shed or drop their leaves, flowers, fruits, or other plant parts. It is a controlled and programmed process that responds to specific environmental or physiological signals. The term "abscission" is derived from the Latin word "abscissio," which means "cutting off." During abscission, a layer of specialized cells known as the abscission zone forms at the base of the plant part to be shed. This zone weakens and eventually severs the connection between the plant part and the main plant. This separation allows the plant to discard old or damaged structures, conserve resources, and prepare for new growth. The abscission process is regulated by various factors, including changes in hormone levels, particularly the plant hormone ethylene. Environmental cues such as changes in temperature, light, and moisture can also trigger abscission. For example, deciduous trees shed their leaves in response to seasonal changes, while certain fruit trees shed their fruits when they are ripe. Abscission serves essential functions in plants. It helps plants conserve energy and resources by shedding parts that are no longer functional or efficient. It also aids in the removal of diseased or damaged tissues, preventing the spread of pathogens. Additionally, abscission allows plants to adapt to changing environmental conditions and promotes reproductive success by facilitating the dispersal of seeds or fruits.
