Allelism

Allelism refers to the relationship between two or more different forms of a gene, known as alleles, that occupy the same position, or locus, on a specific chromosome. Alleles are alternate versions of a gene that can produce different phenotypic traits or variations in a particular characteristic.

In the context of allelism, alleles are considered allelic if they occur at the same locus on homologous chromosomes. Homologous chromosomes are a pair of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent, that carry the same genes at corresponding loci.

Allelism is an important concept in genetics and is fundamental to understanding inheritance patterns and genetic diversity. The presence of different alleles at a specific locus contributes to genetic variation within a population.

The interaction between alleles at a particular locus determines an individual's genotype, which is the combination of alleles they possess. The phenotype, or observable traits, of an individual, can be influenced by the specific combination of alleles they inherit.

Allelism can result in different outcomes depending on the nature of the alleles involved. Alleles can be dominant or recessive, where the dominant allele masks the effects of the recessive allele in heterozygous individuals. They can also exhibit co-dominance or incomplete dominance, where both alleles contribute to the phenotype distinctly.
