The unique pairing that occurs when a homopyrimidine strand, which lies in the major groove of double-stranded DNA, interacts with a sequence of a Watson-Crick base-paired double helix, resulting in a triple helix. Such pairing is possible when the original double helix features a homopurine-to-homopyrimidine base-paired sequence. Allowed hydrogen-bonded base pairs are thymine to an adenine- thymine pair, or cytosine to a guanine-cytosine pair.
