Embryonic stem (ES) cells

An Embryonic undifferentiated cell which can replicate indefinitely, and/or differentiate into other types of cells, serving as a continuous source of new cells, both differentiated and undifferentiated. Mouse Embryonic cell cells can be isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts; i.e. they are derived from a day 3.5 post fertilized mouse Embryo. They have also been isolated from other species, including humans.When mouse Embryonic cell stem cells are reintroduced back into a day 3.5 mouse blastocyst which is then introduced back into a "pseudopregnant" female mouse, they can give rise to the whole animal (also known as a chimera). Mouse Embryonic stem cells can also be subject to genetic modification. These two properties combined have given rise to the creation of genetically modified mice, a basic and essential tool for current genetic research.
