Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day. A new study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology really drives that point home. This study shows that skipping breakfast can lead to some serious long term heart problems.
Atherosclerosis is the hardening or narrowing of arteries due to a build-up of plaque. This recent publication has shown that skipping breakfast has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Researchers did a study of males and females who did not have any cardiovascular or kidney disease and used a computerized program to place these individuals into three groups: those who skipped breakfast, those who consumed a high energy breakfast, and those who consumed a low energy breakfast. Scientists observed atherosclerosis in a higher frequency in the participants who skipped breakfast and had a low energy breakfast as compared to the participants who had a high energy breakfast. Also, cardiometabolic risk markers were more prevalent in the two groups of skipping and low energy breakfast as compared to the high energy group.
Aside from the association with cardiovascular disease risk factors, skipping breakfast participants were also more likely to have a poor overall diet and lifestyle, frequent alcohol consumption, smoking habits, more likely to be hypertensive and overweight. Researchers would like to stress the importance of good dietary choices and warn readers to consider how one bad habit over a period of time can lead to long term health problems later in life.
