Dr. Victoria McGilligan is a senior lecturer at Ulster University, School of Medicine. Her team conducts research as part of the Personalised Medicine Centre. The group aims to uncover and characterize relevant inflammatory biomarkers in chronic disease states and develop antibody-drug therapies for various conditions, such as coronary artery disease (CAD) and glaucoma.

Our research focuses on the development of therapeutic antibodies for chronic inflammatory conditions. We have a keen interest in the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

Project’s Critical Challenge

Dr McGilligan’s research has focused on targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome using a unique bispecific antibody approach. Results to date are promising, demonstrating the efficacy of the antibody to preserve retinal ganglion cell loss in an animal model of glaucoma (Chemaly et al., 2020). The antibody also has proved efficacious for inhibiting plaque development in an animal model of atherosclerosis (Delfos et al. 2023).

Access to reliable, high-quality antibody development technology is a challenge in furthering the development of antibody therapies for diseases heavily associated with inflammation. Therefore, Dr McGilligan is relying on GenScript’s expertise in high-quality antibody development for project acceleration.
