The new SARS-CoV-2 variant Omicron (B.1.1.529) was first identified in South Africa at the end of November 2021 and classified as a variant of concern (VOC). Omicron has led to increased COVID-19 cases in South Africa and has been detected in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, and many other countries. Following the quick rise of the Delta variant, Omicron’s emergence is concerning scientists due to the impressive number of mutations, many of which are found within the Spike protein (~ 30 mutations). The increased number of mutations in Spike’s receptor-binding domain (RBD) may affect how this variant interacts with the entry receptor ACE2 and antibodies. Much remains to be learned about Omicron, but preliminary findings suggest an increased risk of reinfection with this VOC.
