amniote

higher vertebrate capable of terrestrial reproduction, and having an amnion during its development. Includes reptiles, birds and mammals.

Amniotic fluid

The fluid surrounding the developing fetus that is found within the amniotic sac contained in the mother's womb.

amoebocyte

Mobile cell in a sponge.

A mutant showing the complete lack of some normal substance or structure.

Amphetamine

A compound (or its derivatives) that acts as a central nervous system stimulant. Used as a stimulant in depressed states, to reduce appetite, and in attention-deficit disorders, it can also alleviate nasal congestion. Amphetamine use can lead to dependence. It has a high potential for abuse. Blood and urine tests can detect Amphetamine use and toxic levels.

amphibian

An organism, such as a frog, toad, salamander, or some types of newts, having an aquatic early stage (e.g. tadpole) and developing air-breathing lungs as an adult (e.g. frog).

amphidiploid

An allopolyploid; a polyploid formed from the union of two separate chromosome sets and their subsequent doubling. An organism produced by hybridization of two species followed by chromosome doubling. An allotetraploid that appears to be a normal diploid.

Amphimixis

Union of gametes in sexual reproduction.

amphotropic virus

An oncornavirus that does not produce disease in its natural host but does replicate in tissue culture cells of the host species and also in cells from other species.
