template

A polynucleotide that encodes the information from which another polynucleotide, of complementary sequence, is synthesized.

terminal glycosylation

The final modifications of the N-linked carbohydrate moieties of a protein that are effected in the Golgi apparatus. (see also core glycosylation)

termination factor

A protein that assists in the termination of the action of an RNA polymerase, e.g. the rho factor.

terminator codon

A polynucleotide triplet that signals the limit, at the C-terminus, of protein synthesis.

tetrahedral intermediate

A proposed transition state in the hydrolysis of a peptide or ester bond in which a nucleophile, water or a functional group of the enzyme catalytic site has added across the carbonyl group.

thanatogene

thin-layer chromatography (TLC)

A technique to separate small molecules on a thin film of an adsorbent on a glass or semi-rigid plastic surface by their differential mobilities in a liquid phase that passes through the film by capillary action.

thiocyanate degradation

A method for analysis of peptide structure by repetitive sequential degradation from the C-terminus. The free a-carboxyl group is activated with acetic anhydride and reacted with thiocyanate, and the terminal residue is then hydrolysed off as a thiohydantoin. (see also Edman degradation)

thiostatin (T-kininogen)

An 1-cysteine proteinase inhibitor and kininogen of the rat.
