autonomous specification

determination of cell fate by cytoplasm acquired during cleavage, independent of interactions with neighboring cells.

autopolyploid

A polyploid formed from the doubling of a single genome. polyploidy in which all the chromosomes come from the same species.

autoregulation

The control of the transcription of a gene by its own gene product.

autosomal dominant

An allele that masks the expression of another allele.

autosomal set

The non-sex chromosomes consisting of one from each homologous pair in a diploid species.

autozygosity

homozygosity in which the two alleles are identical by descent (ie they are copies of an ancestral gene).

autozygous

When two alleles are identical (homologous) by descent (i.e. they are copies of an ancestral gene).

auxotroph

1) An organism with specific nutritional requirements.2) A nutritional mutant which can grow on the minimal medium meant for a prototroph only when it has been provided with extra metabolites which the mutant cannot now synthesize.Different types of auxotrophs give rise to an occasional prototroph when grown together( due to recombination).

auxotrophic mutant

A mutant strain of microorganism that will proliferate only when the medium is supplemented with some specific substance not required by wild-type organisms.

average

used to describe what is typical and commonplace. Statistically, averages are measured by the mean, median, or mode.
