average molecular weight

The mean atomic weight of a population of molecules.

avidity

The summation of multiple affinities, for example when a polyvalent antibody binds to a polyvalent antigen.

Avogadro's law

At the same temperature and pressure, equal number of molecules of a gas occupy the same volume (1 mol = 22.4 L).

Avogadro's number (N)

The number of molecules in one mole of any compound (6.02 x 1023).

Avuncular relationship

The genetic relationship between nieces and nephews and their aunts and uncles.

axial skeleton

In a vertebrate skeleton, the skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum.

axil

The regions between a leaf stalk and stem.

axilla

The armpit or an analogous part. Also known as: armpit

azoic

Devoid of organic life.

B form DNA

A right-handed double-helical conformation of DNA normally seen in solution described by James Watson and Francis Crick (1953). A second DNA conformation (A form) is seen in unhydrated DNA (fibres or crystals of oligonucleotides). B-DNA also differs from other DNAs (i.e., A, C, D, E, and Z) by having 10 base pairs PER turn, +36˚ rotation PER base pair, 3.4A˚ vertical rise PER base pair and 23.7A˚ helical diameter.
