accelerated run

The propulsive run a large bird or a poor flier needs to make during take-off in order to achieve the minimum flight speed.

acclimation

Adjustment to environmental change by an individual. The physiological adjustment or increased tolerance shown by an individual organism to environmental change.

accommodation

An increase in the threshold for an action potential that occurs in some neurons during a slowly developing or prolonged depolarization. The result is that only a few action potentials are generated during prolonged depolarization above the normal threshold level.

Acid phosphatase

An enzyme found primarily in the prostate and semen. Increased blood serum levels may indicate cancer of the prostate or may follow prostatic massage.

acid-ionization constant

The degree to which an acid ionizes; Ka = ( [H3O+] [Ac¯] ) / [HAc]

acoelomate

Animals that lack a coelom (body cavity).

activate

To set in motion; to make active.

activation energy (deltaG)

Energy needed to initiate a chemical reaction.

actuator

A device responsible for putting a mechanical device into motion.
