phenotypic screening

Phenotypic screening is a type of screening used in biological research and drug discovery to identify substances such as small molecules, peptides, or RNAi that alter the phenotype of a cell or an organism in a desired manner.

Phenotypic screening is a strategy for the identification of molecules with particular biological effects in cell-based assays or animal models.

In many studies, phenotypic screening is regarded as an examination of the physical characteristics or properties of a collection of recombinant transformants in the attempt to find a transformant cell containing a recombinant molecule that encodes a specific phenotypic trait. Phenotypic screening is used as both an alternative to target-based screening and as a complementary approach, especially early on in the drug discovery process. Nowadays, scientists also focus on combining phenotypic screening with machine learning to achieve more efficient identification of breast cancer-selective therapeutic targets.
