Acroarthritis

Acroarthritis, also known as acro-osteolysis, is a condition characterized by progressive bone resorption and destruction primarily affecting the bones of the hands and feet, specifically the distal phalanges (fingers and toes). It is considered a rare manifestation of arthritis.

In acroarthritis, the bones at the tips of the digits gradually deteriorate, leading to the loss of bone tissue and characteristic changes in the affected joints. These changes may include erosion, deformity, narrowing of the joint space, and eventual collapse of the bones. The condition can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited range of motion in the affected joints.

Acroarthritis is often associated with underlying systemic conditions, such as connective tissue disorders, autoimmune diseases, or metabolic disorders. Conditions like systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), psoriatic arthritis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain inherited disorders, such as Hajdu-Cheney syndrome and progeria, have been linked to the development of acroarthritis.

Diagnosis of acroarthritis typically involves a thorough evaluation of medical history, physical examination, imaging studies (such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging), and laboratory tests to assess for underlying systemic conditions and rule out other possible causes of joint destruction.
