Agglutinogen

Agglutinogen refers to an antigen or a substance present on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs) or other cells that can induce the agglutination (clumping) of those cells when it reacts with specific antibodies.

In the context of blood typing, agglutinogens are also known as antigens and are classified into different blood group systems. The two most well-known blood group systems are the ABO system and the Rh system.

In the ABO system, there are two significant agglutinogens present on the surface of RBCs: antigen A and antigen B. Individuals can have either one or both of these antigens, which determine their blood type as A, B, AB, or O. When an individual's blood containing one type of antigen is exposed to the corresponding anti-A or anti-B antibodies, agglutination occurs.

Similarly, in the Rh system, the agglutinogen D (also known as the Rh factor) is an antigen that is either present (+) or absent (-) on the surface of RBCs. People with the D antigen are Rh-positive (Rh+), while those lacking the D antigen are Rh-negative (Rh-). When Rh-negative blood is exposed to Rh-positive blood or Rh-positive blood products, the anti-D antibodies can cause agglutination.

Agglutinogens are crucial in blood typing and transfusion compatibility testing. The presence or absence of specific agglutinogens helps determine blood compatibility for transfusion purposes and plays a role in preventing adverse reactions, such as agglutination and hemolysis (destruction of RBCs).
