acellular vaccine

Acellular vaccine is a kind of vaccine that may contain cellular material but does not contain complete cells. It is a vaccine consisting of antigenic parts of cells.

Acellular vaccines essentially target dendritic cells (DCs) in vivo with antigen (the specific target of the required immune response) combined with adjuvant (inorganic or pathogen-derived material) that induces DC immunogenic function.

The first generation of new acellular vaccines was developed in Japan in the late 1970s (Sato). Since late 1981, acellular vaccines have replaced whole-cell pertussis vaccines in the Japanese immunization program. Current acellular vaccines against anthrax are less than ideal for several reasons. These vaccines comprise an incompletely defined culture supernatant adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide. There is only partial quantification of the PA content of the vaccine or other constituents, so the degree of purity is not fully known.
