purines

Purines are a type of nitrogen bases; the purine bases in DNA and RNA are adenine and guanine. It is a heterocyclic aromatic organic compound consisting of two fused rings (pyrimidine and imidazole).

Purines are of vital importance to all living organisms. They are essential for synthesizing nucleic acids, proteins, and other metabolites and for energy-requiring reactions. Given their high replication rate or oviproduction, parasites require active nucleic acid synthesis, which necessitates ample supplies of the indispensable purine nucleotides. In general, purine nucleotides can be synthesized by the de novo and/or the so-called “salvage” pathways. The de novo pathway utilizes simple compounds to synthesize the various purine nucleotides. On the other hand, the salvage pathways are reutilization routes by which the cell can satisfy its purine requirements from endogenous and/or exogenous sources of preformed purines. In striking contrast to their host, all studied parasites except the nematodes. Purines are a natural substance found in some foods. Purines aren't all bad, but you may want to avoid high amounts.
