Sensory Organs

Sensory organs are organs that sense and transduce stimuli. Also, they are organs of the body that access those sensory capabilities and help us become conscious and respond to our surroundings.

Sensory organs and the neural networks responsible for processing sensory information are supremely well adapted for detecting input from the external environment. The auditory sensory organs have been highly modified along the phylogenetic tree, but in contrast, the vestibular sensory organs are highly comparable among species. Orientation and motion sensors are critical to the function of many organisms and are among the oldest and most conserved sensory organs in animal species.

The sensory organs of the vestibular apparatus are, first, the semicircular canals and, second, the otoliths (the saccule and the utricle). These two structures are also part of the membranous labyrinth, connecting to the semicircular canals that enable endolymph flow.
