Symbiosis

Symbiosis is any type of close and long-term biological interaction between two different biological organisms. It can be mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic. Symbiosis means living together in more or less intimate association or close union of two dissimilar organisms (as in parasitism or commensalism). It also represents the close association of two or more dissimilar organisms where both receive an advantage from the association.

Symbioses work in different ways, but some common traits can be identified. In most symbioses acquired by horizontal transmission, recognition is based on chemotaxis mechanisms, meaning that the symbiont is attracted by molecules produced by the host. Contact is based on ligand-receptor interactions. In common usage, symbioses are portmanteau that denote any type of interaction perceived as beneficial in any field, whether they are management, construction, waste management, or even business mergers and acquisitions.
