In biology and parasitology, an accidental host, also known as an incidental host or a non-specific host, refers to a host organism that is not the usual or preferred host for a particular parasite or pathogen. The accidental host becomes infected with the parasite or pathogen through unusual or atypical circumstances. Normally, parasites or pathogens have specific hosts they have evolved to infect and depend on for their survival and reproduction. These hosts often provide the ideal conditions for the parasite's life cycle, such as the necessary nutrients, habitat, or physiological adaptations. However, in some cases, parasites or pathogens may encounter and infect other host species that are not their primary or intended hosts. When an accidental host becomes infected, it is usually an incidental or temporary occurrence. The accidental host may not be able to support the complete life cycle of the parasite or pathogen, limiting their reproduction or transmission. Consequently, the accidental host may experience varying degrees of harm, ranging from no apparent ill effects to severe disease or even death. Accidental hosts can play a role in the transmission or spread of parasites or pathogens to their usual or preferred hosts. For example, an accidental host may act as a "dead-end" host, where the parasite or pathogen cannot continue its life cycle but can still be transmitted to other susceptible hosts through vectors or direct contact. The term "accidental host" is often used in the context of parasitology, epidemiology, and zoonotic diseases to describe host species that are not typically associated with a particular parasite or pathogen.
