Achilles reflex

The Achilles reflex, also known as the ankle jerk reflex or triceps surae reflex, is a neurological reflex that involves the contraction of the calf muscles in response to the stretching of the Achilles tendon. It is named after the Greek mythological character Achilles, whose heel was his only vulnerable spot.

The reflex is elicited by tapping the Achilles tendon, which lies at the back of the ankle, just above the heel. This tap causes the tendon to momentarily stretch, stimulating the muscle spindles within the calf muscles. The sensory information from the muscle spindles is transmitted to the spinal cord, where it is processed and relayed back to the muscles via the motor neurons.

A typical response to the Achilles reflex is a quick and brief contraction of the calf muscles, resulting in a downward movement of the foot (plantar flexion). This reflex is controlled by the S1 segment of the spinal cord and is essential for maintaining balance, coordination, and proper walking gait.

Clinically, the Achilles reflex is commonly tested as part of a routine neurological examination to assess the integrity of the nerve roots and spinal cord. Abnormal or absent reflex responses may indicate nerve damage or neurological disorders.
