biomass

Biomass is renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals. Biomass is a plant or animal material used as fuel to produce electricity or heat. It is also the total dry weight of all organisms in a particular sample, population, or area. It may be expressed as g/m2, mt/ha, or similar expressions.

Biomass has been used as a fuel source ever since humanity learned to make fire and served as the primary energy source before fossil fuels became common in the twentieth century. Biomass remains the dominant energy source for one billion of the poorest people.

Biomass can be grown, collected, and converted to substitute liquid fuels by several processes. Currently, biomass-to-ethanol is produced on a large scale to provide a gasoline additive in the United States and Brazil, among other places.

Biomass-fueled generators are occasionally used in hybrid energy, though most often employed in isolated networks, they are the only power plants used. Biomass-fueled generators are similar to conventional coal or oil-fired generating plants, except for the combustors and fuel handling equipment.
