breeding value

Breeding value can be defined as: (1) The value of an individual as a (genetic) parent. (2) The part of an individual's genotypic value due to independent and, therefore, transmittable gene effects. Breeding value refers to the value of an animal in a breeding program for a particular trait.

Breeding value is the deviation of the progeny generated by a given progenitor from the average of a reference population.

Breeding values for resistance estimated using challenge test data will be of little value if they are not highly correlated with the performance of animals exposed to the disease under farm conditions. It can also be widely used. For example, genomic selection involves breeding value estimation of selection candidates based on high-density SNP genotypes. To quantify the potential benefit of genomic selection, accuracies of estimated breeding values (EBV) obtained with different methods using pedigree or high-density SNP genotypes were evaluated and compared in a commercial layer chicken breeding line.
