eocyte

Eocyte, a novel ribosome structure, suggests a kingdom closely related to eukaryotes. Many eocytes possess a distinctive anaerobic, chemolithoautotrophic metabolism that uses H2, CO2, and elemental sulfur as terminal electron acceptors.

The molecular properties and phylogeny of eocytes indicate the existence of a new kingdom. The similarity of numerous molecular processes in eocytes and eukaryotes supports the close phylogenetic relationship between them, in contrast to archaebacterial and eubacterial characteristics.

The cell division mechanisms in eocytes closely resemble those of eukaryotes. Eocytes do not divide equally by septum formation as archaebacteria and eubacteria do; instead, they divide unequally through budding, constriction, branching, and other processes. The tetraether membrane lipids in eocytes contain cyclopentanol C40-biphytanol chains, and their neutral lipids also contain branched alkyl benzenes.

The reasons for identifying eocytes as a distinct kingdom are as convincing as those for the other three kingdoms. Eocytes occupy a unique position in this tree relative to eukaryotes, indicating that they will be exceedingly valuable in future investigations into the origin of eukaryotic cells.
