recessive allele

Recessive allele is an allele whose phenotypic effect is not expressed in a heterozygote. It is only expressed in homozygotes. If a is recessive over A, only aa will show the recessive phenotype.

A genetic trait has two or more alternatives that are also called alleles. For example, natural human hair might be brown, black, blonde, or red. Alleles for each trait can be obtained from each parent. How these are expressed mainly depends upon which one dominates the other.

Some variations show up over others. For instance, the allele for brown eyes is dominant. If someone gets a brown-eyed allele from his or her dad and a blue-eyed one from his or her mom, this person will have brown eyes.

The allele for blue eyes is one of the recessive genes. That means it won’t show up in you unless you get blue-eyed alleles from both parents.

However, Some diseases are inherited, and in many, the alleles are recessive. Recessive alleles exist in other parts of the body, too. When stretching out the fingers of one hand, if a thumb curves, recessive alleles exist.
