In biology, abduction refers to a movement or action involving the outward or lateral movement of a body part away from the body's midline or from the axis of a limb. It is the opposite of adduction, which refers to the movement of a body part towards the midline or axis. Abduction is commonly used to describe movements that occur in the context of joints, such as the shoulder, hip, or fingers. For example, in the case of the shoulder joint, abduction refers to the movement of the arm away from the body, such as when raising the arm out to the side. Similarly, in the case of the hip joint, abduction involves moving the leg away from the body’s midline, such as when performing a side leg lift. The term abduction can also be used in the context of anatomical structures. For instance, it describes the movement of vocal folds in the larynx during speech production. During phonation, the vocal folds can abduct or move apart to allow airflow for voiceless sounds, such as in producing certain consonants like "s" or "f." Abduction plays a significant role in human movement and functionality. It allows for a wide range of motion and enables actions such as spreading the limbs, reaching out, or moving away from the body's centerline. Abduction is coordinated by various muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work together to generate the necessary forces and control the movement of the body parts involved.
