Acromegaly

Acromegaly is a rare hormonal disorder characterized by the excessive production of growth hormone (GH) in adults. It occurs when the pituitary gland, a small gland located at the base of the brain, produces an abnormally high amount of GH, usually due to a noncancerous tumor called an adenoma.

The overproduction of GH in acromegaly leads to the excessive release of another hormone called insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) from the liver and other tissues. Both GH and IGF-1 play crucial roles in promoting growth and development, especially during childhood and adolescence. However, in acromegaly, the excess GH and IGF-1 continue to circulate in the body even after growth plates have closed, resulting in various symptoms and health problems.

The most notable characteristic of acromegaly is the progressive enlargement of certain body parts, typically including the hands, feet, and facial features. This abnormal growth occurs gradually over time and is often accompanied by changes in the skin, such as thickening and increased oiliness. f
